Chronic Back Pain - What Really Helps

If you suffer from chronic back ailments, you are not alone.  Millions of people suffer from back pain, year around.  In order to address the problem of lower back pain, you need to understand what exactly is hurting and why it hurts.  Only through truly understanding the source of back aliments can you apply an effective approach to treat it.  Believe it or not, many people can attain relief through the use of a series of back pain exercises.  If you are willing to do a bit of research, you too may be able to attain back pain relief.

First, what is back pain?  Back pain is a feeling of aches and pains originating from the lower back.  Many sufferers of back pain explain that it is a deep dull ache that doesn’t seem to go away.  Many sufferers of these symptoms also claim the pain radiates to the back from the lower legs and hips, and much of these cases are symptoms of osteoarthritis.  Many instances of pain originate in other areas of the body and radiate to the lower back.  You must understand that the back is an origin of all of the spinal nerves that receive sensation from the limbs.  The lower limbs have the origins of their nerves in the lower back.  Because of this fact, much of the pain of the lower limbs and lower viscera of the abdomen manifest themselves as pain in the back.  In reality, to treat these types of symptoms, the origin of the injury must be realized and treated first, be it ulcers in the abdomen or arthritis in the legs.  The other type of back pain is the one that most people are familiar with, this is the one that affects the muscles and ligaments of the spinal column and lower back.  These types of injuries are typically a side effect of the compound factors of disuse, misuse, chronic injury, and old age.  These will be explained shortly.

Disuse and misuse and chronic injury are a byproduct of the lifestyle of the back pain sufferer.  Many suffers of lower back symptoms work sitting down for long periods, or drive vehicles for extended durations of time, or are overweight or pregnant.  Any of these factors increase the risk of you suffering lower back pain.  Surprisingly, if the source of the injury to the back is from being overweight, simply losing weight will many times ease the pain.  The same with pregnancy associated back pain.  Also, some women with very large breasts suffer from lower back pain due to the chronic tension from the breasts pulling the torso forward and forcing the lower back to do all the work.  With disuse and misuse injuries, one of the best ways to address them to attain back pain relief is through back pain exercise.

If you have never heard what a back pain exercise is, it is essentially a series of exercises and stretches that target the lower back.  The reason the lower back is painful is because it is too weak or overused on a regular basis.  When someone sits with bad posture over a long period of time, this can stretch and weaken the ligaments in the lower back.  Once the ligaments are stretched and weakened, the small postural muscles of the lower back have to work harder to keep the spinal column erect.  It is through this prolonged work that the small muscles of the spinal column become fatigued, and without adequate nutrition and rest, the fatigue will manifest itself as chronic back pain.  The best way to address this series of injuries is through exercise.  Imagine if your lower back muscles were twice as strong as they are now.  That would mean that they can handle the same load-or the weight of your upper body-with half the amount of exertion.  This is the easiest way to understand why a targeted training regimen aimed at the spinal column is the best way to tighten and strengthen a spinal column that has been weakened and hurt from years of disuse.  If you were to lift heavy weights in a controlled fashion followed by proper rest and nutrition, your back would become so strong that holding the weight of your body in an upright position would become a piece of cake.  This is the goal of lower back pain exercises.
